Quantum Computing – the Background and the Future

Jamie King leads the benchmarking team at D-Wave Systems where he designs and implements methods for evaluating the world's most powerful quantum computers.  Jamie was born and raised in Vancouver and studied computer science at Waterloo (B.Sc.), UBC (M.Sc.), and McGill University (Ph.D.).  His dissertation focused on computational geometry and probabilistic analysis of random data structures.  During his postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford, he studied energy landscapes of discrete optimization problems.  Jamie lives in Victoria with his wife and two young children.

D-Wave Systems of Vancouver is the world leader in quantum computing, having sold commercial systems since 2011 to customers including Lockheed Martin, Google, NASA, and Los Alamos National Lab.  Jamie will give an overview of D-Wave's history from the small group in a UBC basement in 1999 to the 160-person company it is today.  He will give a high-level description of the technology behind D-Wave's quantum processors, including the most complex superconducting circuits ever made and the refrigerators that bring them to the coldest sustained temperatures known to mankind.  Finally, he will discuss the applications of D-Wave quantum processors and the competitive landscape of quantum computing as it currently stands.
