Precision in Transit: Active Multi-Axis Stability for Neonatal Transport

Abstract

Neonatal transportation plays a vital role in ensuring critically ill infants can access the tertiary care they need, and that stabilized patients can safely return to their local hospitals for continued treatment. Every movement matters when a newborn’s life is on the line.

In 2025, Iris Dynamics participated in a research project in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), and Carleton University. The objective was to evaluate advanced technology approaches for safer ground transportation of neonates. Iris Dynamics’ ORCA™ motors were used in a six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) motion platform. A base platform simulated road conditions, while a second platform, mounted on top and supporting an incubator, replicated the neonatal transport environment.

Daniel led the electromechanical design of the system and will provide an overview of the research objectives, the 6DoF platform, and the project’s outcomes. The talk will highlight key design decisions that enabled real-time active stabilization through software-based damping across both translational and rotational axes.

Speaker Bio - Daniel Alexander

Daniel Alexander, Director of Quality

Daniel is a product designer, project manager, and Director of Quality. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta. Since joining Iris in 2021, Daniel has led the mechanical design of the company’s flagship ORCA™ Series Smart Linear Motor. He also developed various parallel robotic designs, particularly focused on the Raven family of Stewart Platforms.

He has since led the company to ISO 9001 certification, influencing how Iris Dynamics products are designed, manufactured, and supported through disciplined, repeatable processes. Beyond quality engineering, he contributes to internal manufacturing optimization, applications engineering, and special projects.
